First Day Of The Rip Curl GromSearch In Medewi

First day of the Rip Curl GromSearch 2019 went ahead today with the most talented young surfers from the Lembongan, Java, Bali area and even from Australian, Malaysia and USA. Competing in an exciting, safe and friendly environment, with high voltage action from conpetitors across all divisions including Under 16’s, Under 14’s and Under 12’s and the addition of the Super Grommet division (under 10 years old).

The rocky beach of Medewi offered consistent 3 to 4 foot high long waves, giving the Groms perfect sized conditions to show-off their skills during the day. Starting with the under 16 division, Medewi’s lefts were perfect and sunny all day, giving our grom’s the chance to show their skills and offered good and fair competition. Then, the contest continued with the under 14 divisions, followed by the boys under 10 and the girls under 10 & 12. Boys under 12 and girls under 14 & 16 divisions will compete the next day.

Dedi Gun as Rip Curl Team rider and also the MC for this event used the Rip Curl’s Search philosophy to motivate the kids, each division showed their best during the heats. “This contest is giving an exciting time for all groms. There’s a lot of talent under 16 years old. They are coming from everywhere, from Indonesia and even from other countries. It’s a really exciting event. The waves were also perfect today. I’m sure the conditions at the second day will be great!”, said Dedi Gun.

He made it to the Semi Finals and will compete with Lucky Harianto (14,77), Teddy Bille (13,37), Westin Hirst (13,17), Koldo Illumbe (10,34) and Syukur B Fajar (8,04).

Varun Tandjung from under 16 division impressed the judges with his powerful surfing style, scored (13,17) beating another high performing surfer from Brazil, Raphael Castro (12,40). “I was super stocked, I got some good scores, I made big backside turns with really long waves and the judges really like to see big maneuvers. Hopefully tomorrow I can do better and win the ticket to international final” said Varun.

In the under 10, boys and girls were offering the GromSearch’s public the cutest moment of the day with some of them having pushed by their dads on Medewi’s lefts. Kade Martin showed his best skills during the final, thanks to 12,23 points in the Semi Final. “It was perfect, the waves were nice, just amazing. My best wave was a very long one“, said Kade. Kade will compete with Made Nesa (11,84), Platon (8,00) and Leo Matchett (7,23) at the final.

At the girl division, Kaila Tani Martin scored highest point with 12,07. “It was very fun, nice conditions, it wasn’t too windy and it wasn’t to shallow either. I will be ready for the final and it will be fun since I will compete with my sister!“ said Kaila. Kaila will also compete with Lidia Kato who’s taking the 2nd place with 10,33 and also with Anissa Rei Martin and Hanasturi Jabril.

Rounding out the final morning of surfing Rip Curl also organized beach games for the kids with a lot of prizes provided for their participation. They also helped clean up the area, plant baby coconut trees and learned about recycling conducted by Dua Kala Recycle.
